Demo Day #1: Kitchen Destroyed!

If you recall from the initial kitchen post, the first step to getting this kitchen updated was going to be demo. From the confused cabinetry and drop ceiling to the ceramic tile countertops and varied flooring, it all has to go!

Here is a reminder of where we are starting from:

Confused Cabinetry

In case you cannot tell from the pictures, there are three different kind of cabinets in this kitchen. The previous owner told us that the cabinets by the fridge and stove came from the Habitat for Humanity restore. Amazingly, they were all the right sizes and fit in the space fairly well. For our purposes though, we will not be re-using any of them.

Ceiling & Lighting

Not much to say here….it is coming down. The question is, what is under that ceiling?? The fan hangs pretty low too…. I am about 6’1 and can walk under it, but my brothers or any other dutch man will not fit under there. 😉

Ceramic Tile Everywhere

The light blue, squares of ceramic tile on the peninsulas, countertops and backsplash will all be going as well! Tile with grout for countertops is simply impossible to keep clean! With Tim being an expert in culinary arts and myself a health care professional, we are very fussy when it comes to cleanliness in the kitchen.

Are you dying to see the kitchen demo!?!?!?!?

Here we go….

An empty 20 yard dumpster to start:

Follow that up with help from a work friend, her husband & kids, as well as my parents brings us to a MASSIVE demo!

Our couple days of work in the kitchen created a MASSIVE pile in the living room since we did not have our dumpster there yet the day of demo. I had planned for it to be there because there is nothing worse than moving all of your demo debris twice! UGH!

Especially a demo pile of this size:

Everything including the kitchen sink. HA!

Now that most of the kitchen is demolished, this is what we have to work with:

An empty kitchen = a full dumpster. PHEW!

What is left and What is the Plan?

Thankfully, we did not find any crazy surprises with this demo. With all of the cabinets, counters, appliances, and peninsulas down, I feel like we have really opened up the space. We have never completely gutted a  kitchen. We have always managed to salvage and refinish cabinets and just replace countertops. I can see in my head what I want it to look like, I just have to figure out how to execute it. For now, we have more house to demo!

    1. It is a lot of fun! Definitely ALOT of work, especially with a young family, but it is totally worth it. I think you would be great at flipping and redesigning a house!
